The Attic

The attic lounge boasts timeless sophistication and historic charm.

The Attic lounge is one of our favorite spaces at the Inn! It is the attic from the 1742 addition to the Hills Galloway house and the roof framing system all dates to 1742 thanks to our dendrochronology findings (timber dating). While most of the timber frame is White Oak, the roof system uses poplar common rafters and white oak for the principal rafters and purlins. Visitors get a fantastic view of what a traditional mortise and tenon frame from the 18th century looks like up close. Every timber has a joint consisting of a mortise (pocket) and tenon, which is then pegged to hold it together. There are zero metal fasteners. All the framing was hand-hewn using a broad axe. The floors are made of pitch pine and are original to the attic and have been waxed using linseed oil wax. This treatment was typical in nicer homes during the 18th century, although most attics would have been left unfinished. Please enjoy the space and maybe a glass of Bourbon or Scotch on us while immersing yourself in the most authentic 17th/18th century structure in Savannah!

One of our favorite games to play up here is the 18th-century game WHIST.
